Viridiana Rios, Ph.D. candidate, and Michele Coscia, Ph.D. (HKS) have created maps of Mexican drug cartels' territories using their own automatized search algorithm, bringing together political and computer science to inform security policy debates. The maps and peer-reviewed published paper are available here:  https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8164487/Maps/MapsCriminalOrganizations_RiosCoscia2012.pptx  The research of Viridiana Rios, Ph.D. candidate, was featured at the LA Times for her findings on the origins of Mexico's drug-related violence. She has provided the first empirical evidence that increments in violence precedes enforcement operations conducted by Mexican federal authorities rather than, as it had been argued before, being a cause of them.  Here is a link to the LA Times article : http://articles.latimes.com/2012/aug/25/news/la-trb-mexico-before-and-after-calderns-war-20120823
