I combine network analysis and game theory to explore the relationship between group structure and cooperation. I am interested in questions like: can societies with a caste system sustain cooperation as easily as less hierarchical societies?  When can a manipulative elite polarize groups and incite conflict? What kinds of cross-cutting ties are most effective at preventing inter-ethnic violence?  When and where do mafias form?  Are segregated societies more prone to conflict?
