Peer Concentration Counselor
My name is Walter and I'm a senior in Leverett House. I am from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and grew up in a close family with three little brothers. I'm a Gov Concentrator and am also pursuing a secondary field in Spanish. As you can see from my list of courses, I have many diverse interests and it was extremely difficult for me to choose a concentration. In my search for the right concentration, I considered many different fields ranging from Human Evolutionary Biology to Romance Languages and Literature, but finally settled upon Government and I could not be happier with my decision. The Gov Department offers a wide array of courses in many different fields. It is fun and flexible. I'd be happy to share my experiences with anyone who has any questions or reservations about becoming a Gov Concentrator.
In addtion to school, I participate in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. I was a volunteer tutor for high school students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, worked as a counselor at Mission Hill, I took Latin Dance lessons and Yoga classes offered by the university, and I am a member of the Owl Club. Most importantly, I am the captain of the Harvard Wrestling Team and a serious NCAA Division I Athlete who gained All-American and All-Ivy Honors for the past two seasons. Many people do not know that Harvard boasts 41 Varsity Sports Teams that compete on the NCAA level, which is the most athletic programs of any universtiy in the United States. So a high percentage of the small, tight knit Harvard community is comprised of athletes that must balance a rigorous training schedule with the academic work load of a Harvard Student. If any student-athletes have any questions about balancing school and athletics, I'd love to offer some advice and share my story.
This past summer, I worked as a Summer Analyst in Sales & Trading at Deutsche Bank. Having little finance experience prior to my internship, the strong analytic and communication skills skills I built as a Government Concentrator at Harvard helped me to have a wonderful experience, which ultimately culminated in a job offer at the end of the summer. In the summer of 2011, I worked as a research assistant for Jonathan Macey the Sam Harris Professor of Corporate Law, Corporate Finance and Securities Law at Yale Law School. It was an excellent opportunity to use the writing and research skills that I have developed as a Government Concentrator and learn about the legal profession as well.
During my second year, I left Harvard in order to take a leave of absence. I worked as an intern in the Pennsylvania Senate for Senator Jeffrey E. Piccola who is also Pennsylvania's Chairman of Education. It was a valuable work experience and I was able to see, first-hand, the inter-workings of state government. In addition, I traveled to Russia as part of the NWCA Wrestling team. I was able to see many parts of Siberia and learn about Russian wrestling, culture, and government. As one of the many students who has taken a leave of absence, I can offer valuable information about the experience.
Please feel free to contact me about anything at any time. Take care and have fun!
