FUNDED SUMMER '13 ARTS OPPORTUNITY FOR UNDERGRADUATES: Penland School of Crafts!
On behalf of Deans Diana Sorenson and Heather Lantz in the FAS Division of Arts and Humanities, and through the generosity of a Harvard family, I am delighted to announce a new scholarship to fund a summer workshop at the Penland School of Crafts, a national center for crafts education located in the mountains of western North Carolina.Classes are taught by nationally and internationally recognized practicing craftspeople of exceptional ability. Students range from complete novices to experienced artists, each trying to improve their ability to translate creative imagination into manual skills. The atmosphere is inspiring, with exposure to people in other media in a collaborative, non-competitive setting, with excellent food, hard work and play. Students live on campus. The family of a Harvard alumnus is offering a full scholarship for a two-week session in summer 2013 to a Harvard student completing his/her freshman, sophomore, or junior year.
Classes will be offered in Books and Paper, Clay, Drawing and Painting, Glass, Iron, Letterpress, Metals, Photography, Printmaking, Textiles, Wood and others. Students must be at least 18 years old and willing to work hard and to risk exceeding their own expectations.
The application requires a personal statement, resume, unofficial transcript, and one letter of recommendation. Applications should be delivered to my office (77 Dunster Street) by the Friday May 10, 2013 deadline, which means students need to act on this quickly. Thank you for spreading the word!

YaLa-Young Leaders is a Facebook-based movement promoting dialogue and engagement as means to securing a safe, productive and peaceful Middle East and North Africa region.
During the “Political Science and Middle East Studies” summer programme we will be meeting with YaLa project managers who will share with the participants their experiences with this new successful approach.
Galilee Institute believes in the people to people connection and that communication is the way for peace in the region. Over the years the Institute has instigated various peace Initiatives (please click for further information).
This summer, we are looking forward to welcoming participants that are eager to see and better understand the current situation in the Middle East, in general and Israel and Palestine, in particular.
