Daniel Koss studies the politics of East Asia with a strong interest in modern history. His research currently focuses on local governance in China, the Chinese bureaucratic apparatus and the strategic challenges facing leaders in defining the state's role in society. At Harvard, he has written seminar papers on the establishment of communist control over Shanghai (1949-1955), as well as Chinese trade patterns in Africa and the strategic uses of history in East Asian diplomacy. Before coming to Harvard, Daniel Koss has worked for the German foreign ministry, including a posting as First Secretary at the embassy in Cameroon.
