Class of 2023 (Cabot House)

Hey everyone! My name is Madeline (Maddy) Ranalli, and I’m an off-cycle junior in Cabot House from Newton, Massachusetts! I study Government on the public policy track with a secondary in Energy and Environment and am thrilled to be one of your PCCs this academic year!

I’ve gotten to sample many different courses within the department, from Professor Skocpol’s seminar on Inequality and American Democracy to Professor Kertzer’s American Foreign Policy and Professor Hagopian’s The Politics of Brazil. I’ve also taken many courses in the Environmental Science and Public Policy (ESPP) department which I’m happy to chat about as well.

I’ve developed a focus area within Gov in American climate policy and worked this past year I worked with Professors Tingley and Ansolabehere in crafting and facilitating the inaugural year of Gov 1722: The Politics of Climate Change (which you should take in the spring!) and am very passionate for vamping up the department’s environmental policy commitment and offerings. My specific research interests lie at the intersection between environmental and housing politics in American suburbs, which I’m currently working on for my thesis. All that said, if you’re at all interested in climate or housing policy, reach out to me and I’d love to chat!

Outside of class, I sing with The Harvard Opportunes and the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum. I’ve also researched with Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies and do a lot of affordable housing advocacy in my hometown. Who knows what the future holds, but I hope to work in government in the future and perhaps get a Masters in Public Policy or Environmental Management. Whether deciding if Gov is the right fit for you, developing a focus area, or just chatting about politics, feel free to reach out!
