His research focuses on governance by non-state actors, the short- and long-term legacies of political violence, identity politics, and methods for measuring sensitive attitudes and behaviors.
He previously served as the Somalia, Somaliland, and South Sudan research lead at Consilient, where he managed a portfolio of program evaluations and formative research projects on behalf of development and humanitarian partners, including UN agencies, USAID, FCDO, CARE, and Mercy Corps. He also worked for Search for Common Ground, where he helped implement an initiative in Indonesia to facilitate the social reintegration of individuals formerly incarcerated on terrorism charges. Nic holds a BA in Sociology and Global Affairs from Yale University and a Master of Management Science in Global Affairs from Tsinghua University.
