Hi everyone! My name is Sofia Chavez, and I am a senior at Currier House studying
Government on the Law and Justice track with a citation in French. I’m also an international
student from Mexico here at Harvard, and I’m super happy to be one of your PCCs this year!
Most of my education in the Government Department focuses on political theory and
international relations, with a regional focus on Latin America. I’m particularly interested in the
normative political implications of the dynamics of judicial systems and diplomatic relations
between Mexico and other Latin American countries. My senior thesis is a close normative
analysis of the 2024 Mexican judicial reform and its implications for democratic legitimacy. Feel
free to ask me more about the intersection of political theory/philosophy and international
relations! Three of my favorite courses are Gov1295: Comparative Politics in Latin America with
Professor Levitsky, my Gov94JE seminar Revolution!: Radicalism, Liberalism and Conservatism
with Dr. Ecker, and Gov1740: International Law with Professor Mikulaschek. I’m more than
happy to recommend more courses within and beyond the Gov department!
On campus, I’m involved in public service and journalism. I’m an interpreter intern (bilingual) at
the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau (HLAB), assisting law school students with live Spanish-English
interpretations between them and clients, and I also write for the Harvard Undergraduate Law
Review (HULR) on international legal themes. Off campus, I’m a volunteer at the Brazilian
Worker Center located in the Boston area and have recently studied abroad in England. In my
free time, I also enjoy digital photography and learning new languages.
The Government Department has a lot to offer! Please feel free to reach out to talk about
courses, career opportunities, pre-law studies, language citations, study abroad, double
concentrations, senior thesis, work balance, or college life in general! I am looking forward to
meeting you!
